On November 26, 2017, the Canadian Churches and Church Related Organizations Forum on the Middle East sponsored a video-conference to connect three prominent Palestinians and church representatives with over a dozen locally organized venues across Canada.
Three horrifying wars and a decade long punishing blockade have made it increasingly difficult to visit Gaza or for Gazans to visit us. At the same time, the importance of hearing their voices and deepening our solidarity grows ever more urgent. This video-conference helped Canadians to connect with Gazans. This event allowed us to strengthen our solidarity and ensure that our Gazan partners’ voices are given a wide hearing. The event also provided an opportunity to raise funds for the Al Ahli Arab Hospital and Near East Council of Churches (NECC) Clinics in Gaza.
Suhaila Tarazi, Raji Sourani, and Sami El-Yousef will speak to us live from Gaza and address the Christian presence, medical realities, and human rights situation there, with opportunities for Q&A with them. As we talk, we will consider how we can continue to engage concretely with Gaza.
Help ensure that the Gazan enclave and Palestinians in general remain in the consciousness of Canadian churches and civil society.
Our three speakers were:
- Suhaila Tarazi – director of Al Ahli Arab Hospital, Gaza
- Sami El-Yousef – regional director of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association – CNEWA
- Raji Sourani – Lawyer, recipient of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award and
director of Palestinian Centre for Human Rights – Gaza
The co-presenters of this videoconference were:
Anglican Church of Canada
Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA)
Presbyterian Church of Canada
United Church of Canada
United Network for Peace and Justice in Palestine/Israel (UNJPPI)
